+912 It really irritates you when you hear about over-protective parents who still won't let their teenage kids watch PG movies or hang out with their friends without adult supervision, etc. Come on, if you want your kid to grow up properly in the real world, it might help to actually show them what the real world is like. amirite?

I agree with the PG part, but sometimes kids need to be kids.

Thank you! My mom doesn't let me do ANYTHING. The only time I'm allowed to go outside is when I'm picking my brother, sister, or going to the store for my mom. Otherwise, I'm stuck inside babysitting while my mom goes out and has fun.

I moved out of my parents' house when I was 17. Before I left my curfew was 9pm for dates. Hanging out with friends during the day meant being home by 6pm or sundown depending on the season or school nights. I wasn't allowed to cross the main streets near my house at all while living at home. PG13 movies were out of the question on tv or as rentals. And going to the theater required parental supervision. I honestly believe I was stuck at age 13 until I moved out and saw how the real world worked. Now, I have a 4 year old and I do my best to shelter her from true harm and danger, but even at 4 if she wants to watch a scary movie I warn her and then watch it with her. I don't want her to have the shock of reality the way I did. I may not know exactly how to raise her, but my pride is in knowing how NOT to raise her.

There needs to be a balance between over-protective and not protective enough parents. I hate it how I still have friends with parents that won't let them spend the night unless we've planned it 2 weeks in advance. It's really stupid.
