+246 All of the states seem to have normal nicknames like the Bay State and the Volunteer state, but then you get to North Carolina and it's "The Tar Heel state" WTF?! amirite?

Half my family lives in NC. I think it has something to to do with either a war, or a plant. I can't remember which XD

I'd say "the Volunteer State" is pretty wtf too. Rumor has it, during the Civil War, some important general or another made a comment about Carolina boys "sticking to their ranks like they had tar on their heels." (The supposed comment was probably inspired by the large amount of tar manufactured here.) Well there ya go.
