Hair isn't naturally long. You grow it long yourself. Maybe those people asked for 'a bit off' but the hairdresser cut off too much, or they want to see how they look with real long hair before spending all the time growing it. If you want to do it the hard way, go ahead, but if someone is lazy, they should have the right to take the easy way out, if it doesn't hurt any one and especially if it boosts the economy. I'm pretty sure it's a lot of trouble taking it off and replacing it properly every day, so it's not easier in every aspect.

I had extensions. They take a lot more tender loving care than your natural hair does. I had to wash them in the sink almost everyday, then comb them, then lay them out to dry. The clips hurt my head like hell, when someone yanked on them it would rip the clip out of my hair which hurts a lot worse, and it took 15 minutes to put them in and 10 minutes to take them out. Extensions aren't easy.
