No. Just ask a girl on a date. Coffee/lunch is a friend thing, and you don't want to be put in the friend zone.

Not necessarily. Just get some of the foundation for the relationship (whether it's friends or more) out of the way. Coffee, lunch, or whatever else is a great way to just talk and find out what you have in common. And if you have enough in common or you can tell you're compatible then a date is a great idea.

like yesnomaybe said, that's already a date. if younwere thinking in terms of getting to know each other before going on that first date, well, isn't that what first dates are for? you're allowed to be awkward around each other, it's pretty much expected. if it's meant to be, it'll be fine even with the awkwardness that comes from being alone together for extended periods of time.
