Dear emo people, cutting yourself does not take away your emotional pain! amirite?
by Anonymous12 years ago
actually cutting does make you feel better.
"The brain releases endorphins when the body is cut. These endorphins provide pain relief and a sense of well-being, thus relieving psychological pain."(http://www.howtodothings.com/health-and-fitness/a4679-how-to-understand-people-who-cut-themselves.html)

Yes, but it's a very temporary solution. If they want stuff like depression to go away cutting will not get rid of it.
*But if the poster is referring to temporary pain I agree with you.

I am not emo, but i do cut. I have for 2 years and it actually does help. However i am now getting help for my cutting and depression.

No it does, or at least make the illusion of it. It redirects the pain to the cut, and that feels not as bad.

Wow it's so sad that this has more no ways than yeah you ares..
I just wish more cutters would learn to cut downwards and not across.

I wish you would cut downwards, you prick.

I cut downwards...and I've never had any problems. I cut on my forearm, in the middle.

You're not doing it deep enough.

I get the neuroscience of hurting yourself, but when I'm pissed/sad I want to hurt other people. The last that would occur in my mind is to hurt myself, because if I do I'd just feel like someone is "winning".

Different people respond to stress and emotions in very different ways. When you're fighting your own mind (depression, bipolar, etc) cutting can feel like victory, though it's certainly short lived. I wish there was more of an awareness of cutting so that people could get help and not feel ostracized for it. Its a serious problem.

this is an ignorant thing to say, and keep in mind that cutters aren't just emo they could be your class president, captain, best friend, ext.

People don't always do it because they think it will solve their problems. In fact, we know it won't solve anything. Usually its for two reasons, explanations and control. You sometimes don't understand why you have your emotional pain, but you know why you have the physical pain so it provides an explanation that settles your nerves. You don't think you're going crazy because there is a reason why you have that pain. Also, you can't control your mental pain because when you get to the point of cutting, your mind goes crazy and nothing makes sense. When you cut yourself, you are in control of when the pain happens and everything about it and it makes you feel good that at least one aspect of your life is in your control. So no, it doesn't take AWAY emotional pain, but it helps you cope with it and does make you feel better for a little while.
