The first chapter in To Kill a Mockingbird is impossible to read. I don't get one word of it. amirite?

You're right. It only makes sense when you read the book for a second time.

I couldn't agree with this more.

First chapter's meh, but I loved reading it in English last year.

Once you're past the beginning, it's an amazing story!
by Anonymous13 years ago
Well the first chapter takes place before the rest of the book (like the rest of the book is a flashback) so it'll make more sense in a few chapters. Keep reading though, I really enjoyed the book.

I don't remember the first chapter (it's been 2 years since I read it) but I remember it being easy to understand.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Yeah okay so not everyone's as smart as you.

Great Expectations.
That Book Is Worse..

every single chapter of that book is ridiculously hard to read.
it's a good book, though.

The story line is amazing but Charles Dickens' writing makes me want to cry. LAst year we read tale of two cities and great expectations. I thank the lord everyday that this year I got an english teacher that refuses to teach dickins.

I read that book when was ten. And eleven. Didn't understand. Twelve, didn't understand. Thirteen- understood little. It room me a very long time and many re reads to understand the meaning and all.

I just found that it was hard to focus on the first chapter of the book. I had to re-read each paragraph a couple times before I actually paid enough attention where I understood what I was reading. But besides that, the book truly does get better!

worst fucking book i'm ever reading. i hate required books.
by Anonymous13 years ago
this is ironic because the book i am reading in class is TKAM
by Anonymous13 years ago
i probably would have liked it better if i hadnt read it in the eighth grade and had no idea what i was reading.
by Anonymous13 years ago
No, that is not ironic. That is a coincidence, and you need to learn what ironic means before you use it.

Oh God, I started that book when I was 12, then stopped because I was like "grrr... this is stupid. Im NOT reading this in high school" then I started again like 6 months later (Still 12) and I understood it more, I got to chapter... 3? and then lost the book ):!!
by Anonymous13 years ago
The first chapter is painful, and if it were published today it hopefully would've just been cut out of the book. It gets so much better towards the second half!
by Anonymous13 years ago
Just be glad you were assigned an enjoyable book as opposed to something like Moby Dick. I didn't catch a word from any of the 135 chapters
