Well actually you're using one life while playing, and have 99 lives to continue with. Cumulatively you have 100, but you cannot have 100 continues.

If she is talking about Super Mario on Nintendo64, You "end" the game with 99 lives. Before you go beat bowser you have to go on the roof of the castle to meet yoshi and he gives you lives until you reach 100 lives. Yupp, im a video game junkie haha
