+282 You wonder how it came to be that we have hundreds of languages. What did the first couple hundred people split up or something cause they didn't like each other? amirite?

Yeah, that's pretty much the case with languages that originated from Latin - the Greek and Roman empire split, and everyone took their ball and left.

It did not begin with Latin; Latin was a developped language. There are certainly others that no traces were left of.

That's why I specified "languages that originated from Latin" rather than just "all languages".

Well, The Tower of Bable is one theory of how it happened

by Anonymous 13 years ago

thats exactly how it happened. God created the different cultures when a family of brothers sinned and they each got their own punishment, and The Tower of Babble

Well, places like China were so remote from places like Mesopotamia (modern day middle east), or Egypt (they thought they were the only civilization for like 2000 years) so They developed their own language. Also, places like Egypt were kind of isolated because of the desert so they developed their own language.

my point was HOW did they get isolated, why did people separate?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

They wanted to explore the vast, uncharted world, and/or natural conditions forced them to move elsewhere. It could be lack of resources, harsh weather, very angry animals, etc.

They just always were. There is no real explaination, you can always search that

What, you suppose they were supposed to all live together in one village forever? Even if they were all in love with each other, it's still impossible to not develop more languages over time.

In my religion, Allah created separated races and languages from the start; mankind wasn't just started in one area.
