-175 I don't see the French, British, Japanese or South Africans claim a continent as their nationality so why should "americans"? amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

australians do too, dont be hating on us :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oceania has what? like 4 countries or something. America has plenty.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh yeah, and the continent name isn't Australia.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Uh yeah it is. What do you call it?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A continent is one of several large landmasses on Earth. They are generally identified by convention rather than any strict criteria, with seven regions commonly regarded as continents – they are (from largest in size to smallest): Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continents

by Anonymous 13 years ago

what else would you call them? United americans? United statians? Usaricans?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Think of something, just don't claim a continent.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Are you really offended by this or are you just trying to argue? (I'm honestly curious because I've never heard this complaint before)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just for the sake o@285506 (Anonymous): Not offended, but it's too much to think of yourselves as an owner of a continent when no one else does.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We don't think of ourselves as owners of a continent. I really hate when people throw this at us. I mean, what do you call us?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ummm news flash: we didn't come up with what we're called ("we" meaning anyone who's alive today). So we're not claiming we own the entire continent. I'm not sure who first came up with the name, but it just as easily could have been someone from another country.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well the French and British can call themselves Europeans if they want to. And I believe sometimes they do.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I guess technically they'd be Americans of the United States, but who wants to get technical?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It is the United States of America. "United States of Americans" sounds like an organization, not nationality.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

United States of AMERICA. There aren't any other nations with the word 'america' in their name. We can therefore be Americans. And btw, this is a re-re-re-re-repost.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

People who live in the USA aren't the only ones to refer to US citizens as "americans". The world in general calls us americans also, so try telling it to the whole world. I personally wouldn't care if other countries in North & South America referred to themselves as "americans". It doesn't really matter to me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's funny because the stereotype is usually that Americans are stupid, not the people talking about them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's really surprising that we AMERICANS don't hate you europeans very much. All you do is bash on us for no reason. All we did was help you win both world wars.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The French come from France. The Japanese come from Japan. And the Americans come from The United States of America. If we were laying claim to the entire continent of North America (the continent we're located in) we would refer to ourselves as THE North Americans. But we don't. The name "United States of America" refers to the 50 states consisting of our nation (America). Hence, we're Americans.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why bother to even post this? It's pretty obvious that Americans don't believe that they own a whole continent. This isn't something to get all upset about, OP, because frankly, it's quite childish. The whole reason the OP posted this was to bash Americans a little more. OP, you don't know even a small quarter of the people who live in the US, so how on Earth can you say that ALL Americans believe that they own a continent? Can you read minds, or are you just ignorant?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've heard French and British people refer to themselves as Europeans. I've also heard Japanese people call themselves Asians, so they wouldn't have to differentiate. So, either you don't get out much or you're one of those people who like to bash America. Plus, you just called us Americans as well (like people from other continents do), so you're apparently letting us claim the North American continent, even if you put it in quotations. Which means you don't know what else to call us, which means there is no other established name for our nationality, so really, we aren't claiming a continent, but our nationality is what it's been called for decades. Which basically means this entire post is a moot point.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's the United States of AMERICA, genuis...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not seeing a problem...take this up with the world if you don't like our name.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

They aren't claiming the continent. If you're from North America, you are NORTH AMERICAN. If you're from the USA you are just AMERICAN.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm so confused by this post. We don't call ourselves american because of the continent its because our country's name is the united states of america

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I get why people call themselves Americans, but (if there is) people who call the contry U.S.A for America that is wrong.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And last time i checked, South Africa is part of the continent AFRICA!! they kinda did the same thing we did and claimed themselves as PART of the continent

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Its called European, Asian, and African. Fucking duhh.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So we're supposed to call ourselves United States of Americans? And the continents are called North America and South America. We were named the United States of America because our country consisted of states in the Americas that were united together. Get it?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The continent IS called "North AMERICA." technically, two entire continents can call themselves American. Canadians and Brazilians and most of the other countries in the Eastern Hemisphere are American. And we typical Americans (by the way, only some of us are fat &/or stupid. I'm sure there are people like that everywhere else.) do live in the United States of America. if someone's already said this... whatever. the more the merrier, right? :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

*Western hemisphere :) (just saying it before someone says you're stupid because of an honest mistake)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm a teenage American girl, and of course I own this continent! since I'm American, and obviously there's no one else here. It's all mine, mine, MINE!!! I've never met anyone who thinks that we own the continent......

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If we were claiming the whole continent, we'd call ourselves North Americans. As it is, "America" is part of our country's name and that's why we're Americans.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Since this post is using stereotypes already. If we AMERICANS wanted to claim the entire continent for ourselves, we would. Because as americans, we take whatever the fuck we want. But we CHOOSE not to. We are content with our country and do not desire to control the entirety of North America.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This is be cause America are better and hotter and smarter then all other countrys! We deserve to be useing the name of the continant and poor nigger places like south Africa don't!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Dear retard, South Africa is mostly white.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"South Africans" We're North American, it's the same concept. Fail example.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The continent is Australasia not Australia.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Are y'all seriously arguing about this? The OP was just trying to make joke. Calm down. I'm American, or whatever you want to call me, and I thought it was funny. We all know that we don't think we own the continent. If people from other countries want to think that, let them. It's really okay. I promise it's not the end of the world.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Except, not the whole continent is the United States of America, and not everybody living on the continent is American, because there's a different country on the continent too, Canada and those who live there are called Canadians. If you wanted to refer to the people on the whole continent, it should be "North Americans".

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I so knew that there would be so much debate on ths.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

trolled much?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What else can we call ourselves? United States of Americans? If we were trying to claim the entire continent, we would call ourselves "North Americans." Which we don't, so I don't see your point here.
