How do you not understand? When the Mona Lisa was painted, it was kind of a cultural mystery that everyone wondered "why is she smiling?" (Probably because it's a kind of inside-joke type of smile). With Different Strokes, the famous line "Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis?" has grown to have a life outside the context of the show's plot. It's also become a cultural thing. "What was Willis talking about?" people jokingly ask. Now isn't it less funny once I've explained it?
