I have heard this joke since the 1970’s. Up Shit’s Creek Without a Paddle” means no way out and intellectual jokingly say UP THE RIVER OF HUMAN EXCREMENT WITH NO MEANS OF PROPULSION for decades. Looks like one of the show’s writer knew the very very old joke. It’s not original.
