i think the most epic pi instant would have been on March 14, 1592, at 6:53.58.979. too bad pi wasn't known then.

Technically they new what pi was; they just didn't know that it was irrational yet (proved in 1768 by Johann Heinrich Lambert). However, they had estimates accurate to as much as 11 digits by the year 1400 (thanks to the Hindu mathematician Mādhavan of Sangamagramam). So they could have celebrated pi day back then, if there had been a sufficient quantity of nerds to apprecciate what the holiday meant.
