+427 When you see those charity infomercials about donating to kids in Africa, you think: ''Why are they always being eaten by flies'' or ''Why don't you help them instead of watching them get eaten by flies'', amirite?

Until you've been over there to experience what life is like, don't make fun of the people. They are amazing.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

...What? I think OP was asking why the film crews don't help the suffering people, and they just film the suffering.

i live like it.... kinda.. my family is a little messed.. actually more than a little... :(

Where in my post do I make fun of them? And btw, I know people who live like that, don't assume all amirites are supposed to be funny.

You say "why are they always being eaten by flies." When running water isn't something you have, and you have to walk 10 miles every day to get the water for your families daily water use, not many families are willing to use that to bathe in. Does that answer why there are always flies around them?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The point is that they wouldn't be being eaten by flies if the camera crews filming them would help them, which they seemingly don't.

Read my later post.

Yup, I agree with your comment, but clearly you are still offended with my post, sorry if it offended you, but its not supposed to be humorous, but what I think of when I see those infomercials.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Fair enough, but you also have to think, the person who is filming, do you think they really traveled 22 hours just to film the shot that you are watching? Pretty sure they spent time with them to improve their lives what little they could.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yup, but still, can't help but think what I wrote..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lots of people think that, don't worry. But instead of filming them starve, they should film them helping them.

It irritates me hella hard when celebrities endorse those things and says, 'its only ($blank$) a month' blah blah blah. Yeah well why don't you donate? For A LOT of familes that blank is just not there these days. But I bet mr celebrity sat in their air conditioned private jet eating expensive delicious food while reading over their lines for the commercial. Hung out for a bit to give themselves a better name. Picked up a few exdorsement deals. Blah blah blah stfu.

I totally agree. Like you see them in Africa, asking for help for these kids, and they're wearing designer clothes and whatever. It's like, seriously? You could feed the entire continent with what you spent on that outfit.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

OHdarling: right? Its like ok mr private jet and designer suit, if its 'only $50 a month' why don't you pay? That's pocket change for celebs. They could probably fit that whole village in just a quarter of their hollywood hills mansion! It actually makes me more sad that anything. Greedy people.

Those are fake, the "African" kids are all actors. I had a college Sociology teacher tell our class that. About 97% of the money that those companies get from people goes to the CEO's and owners and shit, and only 3% of it really goes to the African kids

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Don't believe everything people tell you. If that were true a lot of charity organizations would be shut down since it would be pretty easy to confirm whether they were really doing what they said they were doing with their funds.

Okay, this is just ridiculous. Obviously, they're filming because they want to inform other people and render them cognizant of poverty and other issues that plague developing countries. If they didn't do that, then lots of people wouldn't even be aware that donations were required and people that were aware wouldn't take the initiative to find how they could contribute. Also, aid giving isn't a simple matter of just going to towns/villages to give people some food and a bit of money and help them 'keep the flies away' to allow them to survive longer. It's about providing them with seeds/tools/sustainable technologies and education to allow them to provide for themselves in future and build their own economy instead of continuing to subsist off donations. To do this it's necessary to involve a broader audience (ie. the people who watch tv). A few dedicated people can make a huge difference but they still can't accomplish everything.

(Your+name+(optional)): Having said that, I can understand why the OP would have such a notion but it is misguided nonetheless.
