-76 Society needs someone or something they can collectively feel superior too in order to function. We need people like Bush, companies like BP, and a crisis like Chernobyl so we can feel better about ourselves, amirite?

Third world countries can even take place by saying "Man, we live in terrible conditions, but our lives aren't NEARLY as complex as a first world country's!", eh?

I don't think society needs these things, but individuals do. Well, no, it's not a NEED, per se. It's a subconscious want. People (and when I say people I mean people who lived in privileged conditions where they have time to complain) love to have something to complain about and have an opinion about in order to feel superior. Honestly, that's sort of the point of the website! I'm agreeing with you because you make a very true point, but if I were to write the post I would have reworded it a bit. Mainly changed it from 'society' to 'people' because there's quite a big distinction between the two.

Society is a collection of individuals. Also, I think the post, while true for individuals (probably more true than what it means), refers to society as a whole, such as America>UK* or Russia is a bad commie country*. *I do not agree with either of these statements. They are examples and examples only.

Society is compromised of culture and ideals and religion and traditions, which individuals in turn conform to, but it's really the individuals who have desires and wants and such. Sorry, all of the Economics studying I did for my test tomorrow is seeping into my daily life. I keep wanting to say "the consumer". :P

LOL at how you dissed people and made a good point.

I agreed, but I think it's more about having a common enemy than superiority. People bond when all they face the same problem, because they can work together and complain to each other and have understanding.

Guys, I have a master plan lets create natraul disasters like global warming, or nuke someone so we can feel superior to the idiot who did it.

I'm surprised so many people disagreed to this. It is so very true. Without people to blame, we'd have to blame ourselves, and feel miserable about it. Though, it can lead to very negative consequences, like the Holocaust. As long as the blaming doesn't get that out of hand, however, this post is absolutely true.
