+128 Why is soccer called soccer. i mean if you played the game by the way its pronounced (sock her), no mother would ever enroll their child in it. amirite?

If a mother actually broke down every word before she let her child do it I would question if she should really be reproducing...

inb4 "the actual name is football blah fucking blah hurr durr oh god im fucking retarded durr!"

I wish Brits would stop complaining about it. We just so happen to have a sport called football. What are we supposed to do? Change the name to 'Odd Shaped Ball' so we can rename 'soccer' to 'football'?

I don't see why they get so mad about it. They invented the word.

I agree that people are overreacting, but why on earth do people call American football, football? Naming soccer football just makes more sense.

I don't know. I guess the kicker used to be a more important player. That's an interesting question though.

"originally university slang....from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of 'association' in Football Association (as opposed to Rugby football); cf. rugger, but they hardly could have taken the first three letters of Assoc."

I heard that it was because when the game was first invented, a lot of people who played it wore just socks instead of shoes. SOC-cer. That makes sense to me.
