+307 Why is it some people go to consignment stores/hot topic/thrift stores, etc. merely to find "unique" clothes? Because, you know, the manufacturer of that "underground" band shirt DEFINITELY didn't make thousands of those to sell to other people. amirite?

I do it occasionally, because it's cheaper and you can get some cool shit there

You won't find even remotely "underground" band merchandise at Hot Topic.

Pretty sure everyone is aware that most of their favourite bands' merchandise is mass-produced. Also, what's considered unique may or may not come into it - the old joke about young people buying into subcultures which preach against conformity, yet usually have a certain style. But, people may be buying clothes because they, god forbid, like the clothes, or buy a band's shirt to show they like the band instead of trying to be unique. And, the appeal of thrift stores is that they often sell clothes that are no longer being made.

I love thrift stores. You can get great vintage clothes cheap, given the right store. I just like older clothes, which happen to be unique.

Hot topic, yes things are being mass produced. but not so much in consignment/thrift stores. also, its possible they don't go to those places to be unique or underground, maybe they just honest to god like those clothes, and therefore buy them,. i don't see the issue there...

I would go to hot topic if they had any in Canada other than in Toronto :( but that aside, I think people shopping at those store (especially thrift stores) have a more unique style than people who shop at say, west 49 or American eagle. Just to stop anyone from getting all pissy about me bashing those stores and the people for being conformist, im not. All I'm saying is that more people shop at quicksilver/billabong/A. Eagle etc, than those that shop at Hot Topic or thrift stores, especially teenagers and preteens.
