-104 it hurts just as much to be called 'too thin' as it does to be called 'really fat' amirite?

Because I'm sure everyone knows what it feels like to be called both "too thin" and "really fat."

I agree that being called 'too thin' can be hurtful, but in today's society people would much rather be 'too thin' than 'really fat'.

I think most people usually say "oh, she's too thin!" in a complementary way (which it shouldn't be used that way, because it can obviously be hurtful) but saying "she's really fat!" is almost always meant as an insult. I think someone's intentions make a lot of difference here.

Too means to a higher degree than desirable, permissible, or possible, it's not a compliment. Either one is body shaming and it's not OK.

It does when you're trying hard as hell to gain weight and the person calling you too thin knows that.

It is frustrating when people assume I dont eat or I have some kind of eating disorder cos I'm "too thin" but I'd still rather be "too thin" than really fat. Its odd but thats just how society works.

I love this blog post on this topic http://yapped.tumblr.com/post/28995458791/size-6-is-small-enough

never really thought about how it would feel to be called too thin since, well, im thick enough lol, but i can see how being called too thin, especially if you aren't thin by choice, can be equally as damaging to your self confidence as being called too fat. feeling too thin or too fat are both insecurities, and not one or the other is a more "legitimate" insecurity. we don't pick our insecurities.

Thats exactly how I feel, I've just never been able to word it as well as you just did haha.

Too fat: tries to lose weight, self conscious about looks. Too thin; tries to gain weight, self conscious about looks. They're really the same concept.

People always tell me how thin I am, and I eat like a pig. It really does hurt my feelings to constantly be told that I am a "bag of bones".

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I used to be told how I should eat, people poked my bones, laughed at me, called me too thin, etc. People don't understand how much it hurts, especially when you're anorexic. Did people really think that I didn't know I was thin? My low weight was 100lbs, for fuck's sake. Even the sickest anorexics know in the back of their mind that they are underweight. One thing that pisses me off so much is when people post those 'size 12 is beautiful blah blah blah size zero is wrong blah blah' statuses and I post my opinion, then I get called the bad guy. Yeah, your size doesn't really matter but size zero is georgeous too. If I said that 'size zero is beautiful, don't let society tell you you have to be overweight' then people would hate me but it's perfectly fine to say the opposite. One last thing: if you're one of those people who think that thin models cause eating disorders, STOP. Eating disorders are complex things, and most of the time models don't have anything to do with it. Everyone's eating disorder is different, but it's way more than 'omggg that model's skinny I want to be skinny like her'.

I hope you're okay now :)

Aww, thanks(: I wasn't that sick but I am a little better now, losing weight but my GW isn't really low(:

As one who has experienced both sides of this, I can with full comprehension say that it does hurt just as much. It's just others placing their expectations on another and them voicing when they are not within such. Body weight sure does bring up where one is with their health, eating habits, stress, sleep, water consumption, exercise, will power, mental health, and relationships. Had to hear about how my boobs "shrunk" when I lost 50 something pounds. I can only be me, you can only be you, let's be happy to be our own person, and respect that others are in fact their own people as well.
