+364 The passage of time brings religion credence. If someone today claimed to be a prophet or the son of god no one would ever believe them, but we have no trouble believing that it happened thousands of years ago, amirite?

But Jesus (I assume you're mostly referring to him) did have a decent amount of followers during his time. Plus there are people like Moses who led a whole tribe of Israelites

that's what OP means. thousands of years ago we believe it but in modern society with it's advance in technology and science, we no longer assume such miracles are possible

I thought (s)he meant if something happens in the present nobody believes it but many years later people see it as completely plausible.

that too I guess. But I think it has a lot to do with the time period you live in as well

If someone made these claims today, their claims would be thoroughly investigated. But when you're talking about someone thousands of years ago, whom you're only aware of through their own religious texts and folklore, your ability to investigate their validity fades away as the time passes. The fact that they had followers in their time isn't really relevant. Modern day cult leaders have followers too, but they don't gain that kind of widespread credibility and immunity; that's why we call them cults and not religions.

But the whole point of the post is that the "passage of time brings religious credence". If they've had followers all along, the passage of time doesn't change anything.

What I meant is that society generally views things that have been around a long time as more valid. What are people more likely to believe: Christianity at 2000 years old, or Scientology at 60? They've both had followers since their inception, and they both make illogical, counter-intuitive claims.

People of the Mormon religion believe there are still prophets, spreading the word of God.

Who is to say there isn't a hogwarts out there? lol Seems just as logical as the story of Jesus.
