+754 Science teachers/other people always say that life couldn't exist on other planets, because they have no water or oxygen. Who ever said that all life is like ours? They could have formed from other things and live on things that would easily kill us, amirite?

I'm not sure real scientists say that. It's been established that life could have existed and in some ways might still exist on the planet Mars and in Jupiter's sixth moon Europa. It's also believed that life forms could exist that are silicon based rather than carbon based, or that use ammonia rather than water, or copper instead of iron. If you go outside our solar system alien life is almost guaranteed. There's even some. interesting research into life that could exist in the vacuum of space.

That's really cool!!

Owned.

I'm pretty sure I've never had a teacher of any kind tell us that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've been thinking the same thing for years.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Are you right? I don't know. And until someone has evidence of life elsewhere, no one knows.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's really weird, I just (not even an hour ago) was talking about this.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

EXACTLY! I always thought this, but every scientist is like " there's no possible way". Well, what if they evolved differently thatn us, huh? Ever think of that?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Okay, I don't know about anybody else, but I've NEVER heard any scientist, science teacher, or anybody else ever say that life couldn't exist on other planets. Seriously, to say that life DOES NOT exist on other planets is just a stupid statement. So, OP, I would advise you to refrain from using words like "never" and "always" because, no, science teachers and other people don't ALWAYS say that. srsly, stfu /rant

No you idiot, what Awesomsaurus3000 was trying to say is that science teachers/other people say that life cannot exist on planets like Mars because theres no atmosphere, no water...understand now? jeez

by Anonymous 13 years ago

ya, if we keep searching for planets with water, we'll never find the Irken empire!... Thats probably a good thing though.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Irken Empire?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's from Invader Zim. They can't touch water or it burns them (the Irken aliens)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

When they say that, they are most likely talking about human life...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Steven Hawking thinks there could be life forms that are made of gas, that live on gas planets.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're right but I don't think scientists say that. Hopefully not at least

by Anonymous 13 years ago

dude you need to calm down.

In basic chemistry and biology, we learn that life formed on Earth from water because: "As solvent, water allows the organization or biopolymers in three dimensional structures and it acts as chemical partner of most biochemical pathways." Brack, André. "Liquid Water and the Origin of Life." Water in the Solar System and Its Role in Exobiology 23.1 (1993). Springer Netherlands. Therefore, while finding life from other sources is possible, it is not probable, which is why scientists find it a prerequisite for life.

That's exactly what I always thought! I mean I'm not expert, but human's can't even see over half of the light spectrum. So who's to say that just because we can't surivve without water, a different species also couldn't?
