The oils on your fingers can damage old paintings. Also, people are stupid so it's almost certain that someone would break something, either accidentally or deliberately. For example, Michelangelo's La Pieta in the Vatican used to be completely exposed to the public but then some guy decided to take a hammer to it, so ever since the sculpture's been behind a glass barricade. That's the kind of stuff that people do.
