i ask them about their lives on a personal lvl, "hows your wife?" "when did you decide to become a teacher?" "if you had a pet monkey named jim what would you name it?"

it really reveals a persons personality, if they say jim with no explanation past thats his name they obviously lack creative qualitys... if they say something like yellow they obviously love fun... and if they say jim but give a proper explanation they are smart
