And if I couldn't, I would always blame it on the shoes I was wearing, as in "I can't climb it because my shoes don't have a very good grip." It never really mattered what shoes I was wearing.

Most definitely. Especially if you could just run right up the slide without having to claw your way up. Now THAT was cool, and DEFINITELY got some respect on the playground...
