+672 It's obvious to think where the titles Mom/Mommy came out of mother, but it baffles the mind to think that Dad/Daddy is another informal way to say Father, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, Faddy isn't exactly the kindest name for your dad.., :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lolol. :P True, what about Faffy though? IT SOUNDS DUMB I KNOW. But, it would fit the mom/mother format, and probably wouldn't seem dum if we used it regularly.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I would not be able to call my dad "Faffy" with a straight face. And what about a shortened form like Dad... Faf?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lolol. It's strange to think about, but had it been reverse, I'm sure dad would sound ridiculous as well. :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Haha yeah probably

by Anonymous 13 years ago

we also can call our fathers pa where did that come from?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Pa probably comes from the word 'paternal'.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

ah i never thought of that that would make sense eh?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It would. I don't know how accurate that is though. The word paternal could've come from pa. Who knows?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

true that. i guess well just never truly know

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(ginnyweasley_3):. ... wow did i really type true that? wow im such a geek

by Anonymous 13 years ago

by Anonymous 13 years ago

from the spanish word "padre" meaning father so u shorten it to get pa or papa.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That makes more sense than what I said.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

and going back even farther...padre comes from the latin pater, patris :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

and everything goes back to latin xD

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"luke, i am your faddy." that just sounds stupid. i mean, where ever it came from, just be glad we arent calling are dads something ridiculous.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"Luke, I am your daddy" sounds stupid too

by Anonymous 13 years ago

When babies are learning to speak they can't pronunciate 'father'. Instead they say 'dada' or something like that. So that probably got shortened to 'dad'.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But the point is, dad is nothing like father, unlike mother and mom...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes. True. But English is just fucked up like that.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1446/whats-the-origin-of-the-word-dad Answers?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Its because the "D" and "A" sounds are some of the first that babies learn to make so its given to the person theyre around the most

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i love how this started off as a funny post and now its all serious and in depth xD

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Faffy Christmas.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Do you really want to call your dad dather?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The words pa, papa, paternal, padre, and pretty much every other word that starts with pa- and means father, all come from the Latin pater or patris.
