you wonder why rappers feel the need to have a rollcall at the beginning of each song, amirite?

Rap is not music, therefore they aren't "songs." They're "raps."

Music is an art form through the medium of sound. If the artist says it's a song, it's a song, because no one has the right to call art not art.

It's close. More like spoken word poetry where the music is just as prominent as the words themselves, if not moreso sometimes.

It's talking to a beat then.

"Shout out to Dae-Dae! Ki-Ki! Lil Mark! Free my dog RaeShawn!"

I got yelled at for saying rap isn't music. It's more of poetry with a beat.

I wouldn't call most rap poetry. Maybe a sad attempt, but not real poetry.

([][][]): Depends on what you listen to. :P

But "poetry with a beat" would still be music. There aren't really that many requirements for calling something music. As long as it has a rhythm, a melody or both it is music. Try tapping your finger on your desk with a rhythm to it, just by doing that you can correctly say that you are making music.

According to my music tech teacher anyway, rap originated somewhat (yeah I know there are probably other origins too) from when MC's would give shoutouts to people in a club, usually along with music so that it would be put to a beat. So, rollcall, shoutouts, same thing

They all sound the same, so they want to make sure you know which ones are doing it.

Lol listen to "Lovers or Friends" by Usher, Pitbull, and Luda. They do a roll call.
