+209 Instead of assuming that everything that goes against the Bible is a test from God, why not assume that the Bible itself is a test, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why give a fuck what a book says? Just form your own beliefs, it's not that hard.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But that's the thing: it's not that hard. Anyone can do it, and it gets us nowhere. Instead of forming our own beliefs, why not try and discern the truth?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because it's probably not written in a man made book and even if it was, it's probably not that one.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't understand your reply.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No one understands it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Anyone who takes everything in the bible literaly are retards (phil the moron and scrotomcity)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ad hominem.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What does that mean? (it's Latin, right?)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Youre on a computer (or other internet accessable device), google it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"Ad hominem" is a Latin phase that literally means "to the man." An ad hominem argument is an attack against the person instead of the idea that person is presenting. Basically, it's name calling.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh okay. Thank you. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Anyone that believes in the Bible period is a retard

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Maybe it is, but they deserve it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It leads to unproductive debate. There is a reply button, by the way. :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I mean if you think that evolution is wrong just because you take creation literaly and then proceed to bash evolution because it doesn't fit in, then you have issues, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Possibly, but we all have issues. The key is to resolve them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I cannot use the reply button because mobile doesn't have java script for me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wow. When people see all of the creativity in the universe and still can't see that it had to have been made... jeez.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Occam's Razor, buddy. Look it up.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I never said that the universe couldn't have been made. I'm just saying that nothing in the universe proves the Bible to be true. The argument "the universe is so beautiful, so the Bible MUST be true" doesn't really work, because you can really just replace "the Bible" with anything else and it would make just as much sense. It's a non sequitur conclusion.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I was going to say that the universe proves the bible to be true, but that would be like saying that the Bible depends on the universe to be true. So I'm going to say that the Bible is truth. All of it happened, and God is REALLY up there, waiting for that moment in time to come and reward those who were truthfully faithful to Him. Those who weren't, well. You know.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How do you know the Bible is truth?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's something that you have to confirm in your spirit. Like, some things that some people say about God, don't sit well with me at all. And I ask someone who's deeper in God than I am and they say that they felt the same way that I did. Other things that others say, I agree with completely. It's just something that you have to feel.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Okay, but that still doesn't explain how or why the Bible is truth.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm going to go ahead and say that one cannot really prove the bible to be true. (I know it is, I just can't make you believe it. Only God can, and I pray that he does.) It's simply a matter of faith. But I'm going to flip that and say that one cannot prove evolution is true. It was supposed to have happened over billions of years, but people only started observing it within the past 200 or so years.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This isn't an argument about evolution. I want to know what caused you to take the leap of faith towards the Bible rather than, say, the Koran, or the Vedas. It's a good book, as far as ancients texts go, but why live so religiously by it? Why not take the good and leave the bad, borrowing freely from different sources to gain a more holistic world view? Why take the Bible and deny all else?

I have come to the conclusion that the hardcore religious (the type that actively oppose gay rights, disown their children if they get pregnant/come out etc). They don't really care about the bible. Sure, they read it and quote passages of it that support what they are doing. However, they conveniently happened to have missed any and all passages that speaks against their hateful actions. E.G, most of them seem to LOVE this passage "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." Leviticus 18:22 While just forgetting passages such as "Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way." -Romans 14:13 "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." -Matthew 7:12 "Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you. Do not accuse a man for no reason- when he has done you no harm." -Proverbs 3:29-30

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself; I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:18 (notice, this passage is written by the same man who wrote the one about homosexuality being an abomination) And, my PERSONAL favorite, whilst not being a direct passage, but part of a story in the bible LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE See, all they are interested in is twisting the words that CAN be twisted, interpreting them to be commands from the almighty to put down "sinners" in any way they can whilst just ignoring the words that they cannot twist. I myself, am not a religious person, but it's just not hard to notice that those who claim they are whilst harming their fellow man and woman, be it by striking them, disowning their own children or going to the voting booth and trying to deny them their basic rights, are very rarely following the true word of the bible as they claim to be.

I think such people are just using religion as a channel to express their hatred and ignorance. They would still be that way even if no religious texts were written. But conveniently enough, there is an established and respected pillar of society that they can hide behind, run politics with and so forth. The Bible is about as respectable as any other ancient text from that era, but it's earned a bad rap due to certain malicious people. It's difficult to view objectively anymore, and in some circles you can't even quote it without being consider a religious nut bag. It's sad what has become of it; or, rather, what has become of us.

"I think such people are just using religion as a channel to express their hatred and ignorance. They would still be that way even if no religious texts were written " That's pretty much what I said. "They don't really care about the bible. Sure, they read it and quote passages of it that support what they are doing. However, they conveniently happened to have missed any and all passages that speaks against their hateful actions. All they are interested in is twisting the words that CAN be twisted, interpreting them to be commands from the almighty to put down "sinners" in any way they can whilst just ignoring the words that they cannot twist.I myself, am not a religious person, but it's just not hard to notice that those who claim they are whilst harming their fellow man and woman are very rarely following the true word of the bible as they claim to be" Though, I should have said NEVER following the word. I don't even know why I said "very rarely" (cont'd)

I'm sorry if I wasn't very clear in my wording, but I was basically saying what you said. Let me try to be a bit clearer. What I meant was that these people simply use the bible to justify the actions they already wish to do. When they twist and interpret words in the bible, they are giving themselves the ultimate excuse. What better way to justify your actions than by convincing yourself that it is what you are commanded to do by the ultimate power in the universe? A power that, after your time on earth will end, will be the first and final thing you will need to answer to and will decide your fate, as well as everyone elses', for the rest of eternity? Nothing that I can think of. Believe me, I'm not just ranting off on religion in general. In the end, as you said, it all comes down to us. Religion, just like every other thing in this universe, can be used for good or evil depending on the one who wields it. Unfortunately, most of our country seems to want to use it for the latter.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh, I understand what you were saying. I guess I was just kind of reflecting it in my own words. I'm sorry. I guess the comment was more of an agreeable response aimed at myself rather than a rebuttal.
