False, Mercator projection maps, the most common type, distort the size of areas near the poles, but keep their shape, which makes locations close to the poles appear much larger than locations further from the poles.

Sometimes I forget that Hawaii is bigger than Russia. Stupid maps.

It just depends on the map and how much they distort true dimensions.
