heat rises but the top of the mountain is always cold, amirite?
by Anonymous13 years ago
It cools as it rises...

I think it was a metaphor

Time to get some Geography up in this bitch.
When the rain clouds get to the top of the mountain, as twisted_memories said they begin to cool causing precipitation to fall on the peak and the dry air continues down the mountain causing a "rain shadow" so usually on the other side of the mountain there is a desert. And I wrote this while I was stoned.

Okay. That has nothing to do with why it's cool. It's because our air is heated by the earth, not the sun directly. The sun heats up the ground and the ground releases heat, so the farther you get from ground level, the colder it gets. That's why places like everest are freezing and places like death valley are super hot!

I know I was describing why the top of the mountain is always cold.

No, you were describing how a rain shadow happens.
by Anonymous13 years ago
But before that I described how you said "heat rises" I said that it causes the precipitation and that causes there to always be snow on top of the mountain. I just threw the rain shadow in as the effect of this.

it doesn't matter if it causes precipitation or not. You can have a totally dry mountain top, it just depends how far away from sea level you as to how cold you are. All because our temperature is affected by sun hitting the ground not the sun directly.

Why are we having a Geography fight?
by Anonymous13 years ago
Fuckin' university geography son!
by Anonymous13 years ago
I'm pretty sure the air is "thinner" as you get higher, so the heat from the sun has less to catch on to.
That's why it's harder to breathe.

you sure this isn't a metaphor?
by Anonymous13 years ago
wow....well thanks for commenting but you dont have to fight over something this stupid :) just had a random thought and wrote it down
