I live there, and personally, I think it sounds weird to say 'in Long Island.' Moslty because it's a island, and things aren't usually *in* islands, but *on* them. That's just my opinion though.

Same goes for Cape Cod, MA. You don't live "in Cape Cod", you live "down the cape."

It can be either. ON an island. IN city limits.
