It's weird that liquids, like soda and soup, can actually DEHYDRATE you from the salt content. amirite?
by Anonymous13 years ago
It's not that weird. It all has to do with diffusion and polarity of the salt and water molecules. If you know the science behind it, it really seems weird that a lot of people think that pop will hydrate them.

Wow, that's crazy! I always thought they were filled with active electrolytes and restored important nutrients to the body. I guess that means no more big bowls of french onion soup along with a 2L bottle of Dr. Pepper after soccer practice.

That's Powerade and Gatorade. You should only drink them after exercise though.
Yeah the Dr. Pepper is probably not the best idea.

I was totally being sarcastic with my comment lol...

Yeah, but electrolytes and water are like opposites. If you drink too much water, your electrolytes will get messed up in one direction, and if you drink too little (or drink too many things with electrolytes) then they'll get messed up in the other direction. That's my understanding of it, anyway.

You, my friend, would be correct.
by Anonymous13 years ago
that's not true. Pop does hydrate you.
by Anonymous13 years ago
No it does not...
by Anonymous13 years ago
Salt is actually the best thirst quencher
by Anonymous13 years ago
I'm pretty sure, no matter what you drink, there is going to be more liquid than salt, so you're going to get hydrated, at least a bit
(excluding salt water)
by Anonymous13 years ago
Not in the case of soup. A few bullion cubes have MORE than your recommended daily allowance. The water in the soup does not nearly compensate.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Soup, yeah I can see that. But pop, soda, coffee, tea, etc?
by Anonymous13 years ago
I didn't say anything about coffee or tea, but I've heard that they do dehydrate you. As for pop, DEFINITELY if it is diet.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Woah, when was salt in Soda? I thought it was sugar...
by Anonymous13 years ago
Both.
One quote from the article,
"Diet sodas that are low in calories are high in sodium. Too much salt in the diet may cause more calcium to be excreted in the urine..."

Actually, If you get a lot of salt in your body, then your water inside you will stay inside longer.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Because a majority of it is absorbed by the salt...
