+263 Why are the symbols for elements like Xenon things like "Xe"? It's a waste of an 'e' because there's no other element that begins with X, amirite?

But... but... Chemical X

Don't you just hate it when they waste e's like that? Seriously, there are e-less words out there that would really appreciate that e.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because e's cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another, hey?

It's because once you get into chemistry in college, you use the letter X as a general element in the halogen group. For example, in my organic chemistry class, when writing general reactions with a halogen we write it like: CH3X + NaOH; instead of CH3Cl + NaOH. This is because the halogens have relatively the same bonding patterns and when you are just talking about a general reaction, you can just write it once with a letter instead of having to write it four times.

No need to state the obvious, pffft.
