Whether you think its good or not, Its only the most popular sport because it's the easiest to play around the world in highly populated poor areas. Right next to my bed is a soccer ball from rwanda made of banana leaves and twine. So to play soccer you need a banana tree and 4 rocks for goals. Now think of the amount of resources you need to play ice hockey. It's probability when you realize in all of africa and the middle east soccer is largely to only sport that can be played by most.

This. My dad used to tell me stories about how his family was very poor and couldn't afford even a tennis ball to kick around. He and his brothers played soccer in their "backyard" with a rolled up ball of twine. It made me really grateful that I had to the opportunity to play catch with my brother with an actual baseball.
