Even from an evolutionary point of view a sense of humor is only a recognition of a certain pattern of speech. And pattern recognition is something we humans are quite good at.

Well think of animals that use song or some other source of sound to attract mates. In the human sense we have speech, and humor is one of the songs that some of us are good at attracting mates with. Kind of a lame analogy, I only hope I don't sound completely insane :P
