+356 It's okay to say Merry Christmas to someone who's Jewish, just cause they don't celebrate it, doesn't mean they shouldn't have a randomly awesome day on December 25, amirite?

Agreed, they need to accept that, whether or not they believe in its origins, the holiday itself still exists. Besides, I wouldn't flip out if someone wished me a happy Hanukkah, even if I don't celebrate it... It's just a nice gesture.

Say what? Everyone accepts that the holiday exists...because it does. That doesn't mean you should go around wishing Jews a Merry Christmas, because celebrating the birth of Christ does not exactly mesh with the religion, right? It's not actually a nice gesture. The sentiment behind it may be nice, but only if you are unaware of what it is that you are saying. Now if you wished me a Merry Christmas I wouldn't "flip out" either, but I don't see how you wishing people a merry holiday they don't celebrate or believe in is a "nice gesture."

It doesn't really have all that much to do with Christianity or Judaism or whatever they may be. Christmas = Dec. 25; therefore, Merry Christmas = Merry Dec. 25. I'm not telling them to have a good day celebrating the birth of Christ, I'm telling them to have a good day on December 25.

I understand that, and as I said in that case you do have a good sentiment behind wishing someone a Merry Christmas. But I still don't agree. Let's switch Judaism to Atheism for a minute; it's the same thing. Actually, I think an Atheist would probably be more annoyed if you wished them a Merry Christmas. To them, it doesn't matter if you mean well, they don't believe in a higher power. Now of course not everyone is the same...I'm sure some see that Christmas has become really commercialized and wouldn't care at all if you said anything to them. I'm just pointing out that not everyone would take it as you just wishing them a great day. I don't think most people would get upset though, either.

I'm Jewish by birth, Agnostic by choice, and I don't particularly like Christmas, but if somebody wished me a merry one, as long as they didn't go overboard with the lights and the carols and insisting I convert to Christianity, then I won't mind. If they meant Christmas as a time to have fun, spend time with family and eat yummy food, and not as a Jesus-worshipping festival, I wouldn't mind at all. Plus my youngest dog, who I consider to be more my son than my dog, is having his first birthday on 25 Dec., so there's more than enough reason to celebrate.

I call it " Merry Movies and Chinese Food Day."

I mean, most people say "Happy Holidays" and get on with their lives.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Saying happy holidays is for pussies who don't want to offend people.

So is being anonymous. (Says anonymous. I just happen to be too lazy to log in.)

I was also too lazy

No need to be rude. I was merely stating an idea.

I think people shouldn't get super offended about it, though. "Merry Christmas!" "Fuck you, I'm an Athiest!" Chill out you guys, most people just say it to be friendly, not to get you to worship their god.

I'm Jewish and I don't care, first post is completely missing the point...
