+34 Musicians shouldn't complain about people downloading music for free illegally because music shouldn't be about the money. As long as people are listening to your music, it shouldn't matter how they get it, amirite?

Well if people are just listening to it then the artist isn't making any money. They only make money if people buy their songs/CDs. So actually they probably DO care.

they get money from shows & tours too, just saying

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ya but people pay to see those.

Not everyone goes on tour and does a lot of shows like mainstream artists.

Musicians make way more money off of their merch than they ever do off of CD sales, so realistically its not that big of a deal when people download their music online.

I really dont listen to any mainstream artists, and they all go on tour.

well yeah, that's what i'm saying. whenever musicians release new music, there's always going to be people who download it illegally and there's nothing that the artists can do to stop that, so they just won't get the money from that. but people will have to pay to see them live since there's no way around that.

Is no one going to say it? It's not about the money, money, money, we don't need your money, money, money, we just wanna make the world dance, forget about the price tag...

DAMN IT! you just beat me to it.

Some bands have been successful with a "name your price" policy. That way, you can get the song for free or pay however much you want for the song. Most people, presented with this, will want to support the artist. This also makes it more accessible to consumers than having a fixed price, most of which usually goes to the record companies anyway. This, in my opinion, is much better than prosecuting people for illegally downloading the music.

That's why some band/artists like Foo Fighters, Green Day and Bob Dylan streamed their albums for free on their websites before they are even in stores.
