+402 If the contraction "let's" means "let us" then why doesn't it sound normal to say "hey mom will you let's go to the party?" amirite?

Contraction are supposed to be used based on ease, and how the sound in the sentence. The example you used would sound clumsy, where as saying "Let us go to the store" to your mate would sound worse than "Let's go to the store".

cuz you're not cool enough to pull it off.

someone once told me that "insulting someone over the internet just makes you look like a douche anyway." oh wait. that was you. in your "about me" section.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yea what I said was clearly a joke. And I never said I wasn't a douche.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

hah I know ya were kidding. you fatty.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Bitch don't call me fat :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

wow learn to take a joke

by Anonymous 13 years ago

hehe well I did say "hah I know ya were kidding" but if that wasn't satisfactory for you I can rephrase it?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

no need. i made the mistake of not reading all the replies before i replied

I think we use a lot of contractions horribly. Like don't = do not, but we say "Don't you just love that?"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

some times i use doesn't as "do you not?"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah that's something you could do but that just reminds me of the 1800's

by Anonymous 13 years ago

how else are you suppost to properly phrase don't you love that haha

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think language changes over time, and in different cultures. Like, in modern 21st century, you sometimes sound like a wanker using proper grammer Ex. Saying "It is I" is grammatically correct, but saying "It's me" usually sounds better.

That isn't the same post, just the same topic.

They both say there are unusually limited times that contractions are acceptable.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"Hey mom will you---LET'S GO TO THE PARTY." it sounds like someone with ADD

by Anonymous 13 years ago

haha that's how I read it too

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hahahahahaha that's fucking hilarious

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sounds fine when some people say let's go to the party

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The hortatory subjunctive and the second person singular present indicative are two very different things. This is what English class is for.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

when i saw contraction i thought labour.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I did too. Hahaha.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I wonder if contractions know how awkward they're.
