+269 The United States needs to get rid of the Democratic and the Republican system. The reason why the country is doing kinda bad right now is because the presidents are just trying to please their political party so they can pay for their campaign again and get reelected. It's pointless, amirite?

A republic in which there is no two party system wouldn't be any different even if there were 3+ parties if they continued to do what they do today.

The current president doesn't try to only please his party... what are you talking about? All the changes he made to his bills are JUST to appease the republicans.... And it's not pointless it's called competition, because if the parties didn't compete, then it would pretty much be like a dictatorship or a monopoly. Although I wouldn't mind getting rid of the Republican party and Tea Party...

The second part of your comment doesn't make sense to me. You don't need political parties in order to compete. You simply need candidates. The poster here didn't say only one person gets elected, but that we need to get rid of the team aspect of the election, and instead of a party getting support because you're on that party, a candidate gets support because his ideas and actions dictated what the majority of the people believe is right for the country. George Washington hated party politics with a passion, and he sure wasn't a dictator was he?

Well, what I'm saying is the Republicans are always pointing out the Democrats mistake and somewhat vice versa, without this, people who don't really pay attention won't know what's going on. If it was only one party, then there isn't that much need to be careful. It's like any company... the Republicans and Democrats keep each other in check? Get it? And no GW wasn't a dictator

There would be no need to keep anything in check if there were no parties. At all. Not even one party. See, if there were no parties, that would 0, which is less then one. What is wrong with a number of candidates, with different plans and agendas, all of whom are judged by the voters on who is best for the country? Also, if what you say is true about people not knowing what's going on, that's another problem we need to fix. If people are going to vote they need to get up of their butts and so a bit of research on the candidates. Pay attention to what is going around them. Otherwise, we are just letting the american people be lazy in another important aspect of the their lives, if the information they get about the political climate is drawn from what the parties are currently complaining about.

Meh I can't really argue with that.... And it's not APATHY! Actually it's partly apathy, but not completely!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How about no parties. Just candidates. George Washington would have wanted it that way. To be elected because what you said you would do was supported by the majority of the people as what they believe as best for the country. Not because you were on the right team.

Some former United States Presidents suggested having one six-year term instead of two four-year terms, so Presidents could focus more on improving the country instead of getting reelected. Seems like a good idea sometimes.

Seems like a good idea ALL the time. And holy crap Nfs is that you? It's me sinne! Geeg's brother!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

definately NOT! it seems like that would be a good idea but it would be utter chaos. the president is not only trying to please his party but also do whats right. without political parties the government would be even more corrupt. people would not know who to elect and the people that end up being elected could be very crooked. without something saying "this is what i stand for and what i am about" then they could do whatever. they could say they were about one thing and go far from it. so no it would NOT be a good idea

How would people not know who to vote for? Just because the candidate wouldn't be called a democrat or a republican doesn't mean that all of a sudden they can't say what they believe in. One of the main goals of a politician is to get elected again, but they can't do that if they make their party angry by voting for something they don't want. And plus, a president can't just do whatever they want. If they turn out to be bad, then they would get impeached.
