+157 "Black" people should not have to be called "African Americans" to be politically correct. If we call them "African Americans" we are assuming that 1. They are African. 2. They are American. There are other races that have dark-colored skin, not just Africans, amirite?

i say if you weren't born in Africa, then later came to America, you aren't African American

I saw a rant about this on some website, and you guys are totally right. I'd rather be called black anyway, "African American" is such a mouthful @_@ @12610 (Coday): What if both of your parents are immigrants from Africa but you were born in America?

Does he look black? (not racist LOL)

Haha, I was actually using "you" and "your" in a general sense there, not referring to him. The scenario I proposed actually refers to me, because both of my parents are from Ghana, but I was born in New York, so I feel it's accurate to identify myself as African American (ethnicity + nationality).

They need to pick something that they are okay with being called already ! I dunno if black or african american or what is pollitically correct. Plus I don't want to offend anybody.

Okay. I'll make sure to bring that up at the next Black People Meeting :). People are always going to have their prefrences but I don't think (in this day and age) anyone is going to yell at you for refering to people of African decent as black. It''s a commonly used term and not meant to offend anybody. If they do it's their problem not yours (IMO). Personally, I prefer being called black because my mom is 'African American' and my dad is from Haiti.

They're black people. It's not racist at all.

No one says Scottish-American or Korean-American btw, if someone says they're Japanese-Italian, you generally think they're half of each, but not that they're a Japanese person living in Italy, am I right? So why don't we think that if we say [insert ethnicity]-American?

And what about Rihanna. She's generally referred to as an African American artist, but she's actually from Barbados
