I think the number that you see when you click a square is the number of squares away that a mine is hiding. I'm not entirely sure though, I haven't played in a while. It should work on all versions of the game, however.

No, the number in the box is how many mines are adjacent to that box. Basically use process of elimination to determine where the mines have to be

I was floored when I finally figured out that the little numbers actually meant something and there was a way to play without relying completely on luck. I was 14 -_-

When you click a block and a number comes up that number is how many mines there are in the 8 surrounding blocks
