+250 It's weird how magazines like Seventeen tell readers they should be happy in their own body and proud of how they look and then give the readers tips on how to lose weight and look better, amirite?

I don't read Seventeen, but are the weight lose tips more healthy eating/exercise plans, and the how to look better basic grooming or make up? Yeah, you should be confided and proud in your own skin, but I don't see a problem with encouraging a healthy lifestyles, or good grooming.

I need to read this to my sister.

B/c most girls want to lose weight ( better for health, not just for looks) and they wear makeup & do hair to look better, but they should still be happy with who they are. I'm very proud of my body and have accepted and embraced my flaws, but I still like to look better and do my hair, makeup and wear cute clothes. There's nothing wrong with that- it's the life of most girls

I like looking nice too. I wear makeup and do my hair nicely and try to dress cute, but those things are not the most important things in y life. So, a magazine that advertises and promotes a pretty appearance 95% of the time, and then tells girls to be happy without makeup or nice clothes the other 5% is a really worthless magazine. Obviously, teenage girls are more likely going to be influenced by the several pages that tell them what to look like.

But most girls care about appearance. The magazine gives new ideas b/c we love trying new styles and looks. It's doing business by appealing to those girls. It doesn't influence me to care more about appearances.

Most of the health tips they give ARE about being healthy, not necessarily loosing weight. However, I think they're the most hypocritical not with the makeup or clothes tips, but with their cover girls. "You're beautiful! Now admire this super skinny model!"

I think that there's a difference between wanting to get healthier and wanting to loose weight

My sister gets Seventeen, which disgusts me and I was looking through one of the editions and the main article talked about loving yourself the way you are; without makeup or a skinny body or a boyfriend. I then counted 47 references to looking better (makeup, fashion, "a tight summer bod") and 29 references to boyfriends, relationships, and sex. Great magazine.

The thing is that these magazines appeal to the teenage audience. As previously mentioned, they promote loving yourself the way you are, and they provide different ideas on how to dress for your shape in particular. Its a fashion thing, people shouldn't get offended by it. In fact, I think it helps people love their bodies more for the fact that they have the knowledge on how to show off their assest and be stylish at the same time. They provide tips on how to eat healthy and stay fit and in shape. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how anyone can react negatively to that information? "How dare you show me how I can keep my body strong!" , that's just silly. And its ridiculous if you get angry because there's someone skinny in a magazine, especially when I know Seventeen always models every shape, plus sized and skinny.

I also should add that most people, especially girls, treat fashion as a hobby. Its fun trying new things with your hair, makeup, outfits, ect. Its something people just naturally enjoy doing. A lot of these magazines provide helpful, new ideas. If you can somehow prove to me that that's bad, I'd love to hear it.

My sister used to get Girls Life magazine, and the cover said things like "50 ways to get fit fast" and "find out if it's love or like" with the cover model being skinny and caked in makeup. There would be those articles in it and then things like "All shapes and sizes are beautiful, no girl needs makeup to look right, boys don't complete your life, etc. etc. Like, really? That's terrible and will give young girls mixed signals if they're trying to figure out the norm of their age.

If anyone is interested, a girl actually did a really interesting social experiment a couple years ago concerning the content of seventeen and how it affects its readers. Here's the blog if you want to go through it! http://www.theseventeenmagazineproject.com/
