Actually, in countries other than America, pubs serve normally one main beer, it would be odd to ask of something else. Like going to a Coke stand in the 50's and asking for an RC. If you just say give me a beer, they give you their kind.

There's usually a "house beer" that the bar chooses, so unless you specify, you get the house beer.

Yeah this blows my mind - I thought it was common practice when you didn't really care what beer you got, or just wanted the cheapest one, to order "a beer". I've done so plenty of times, and have seen a large number of people do it.
