+219 You add specific details when telling a lie to make it more believable, amirite?

That is the human tendancy, but since I know that, I catch people in lies because they add an unimportantant or unnecessary detail.

Usually when I tell the truth, I give a short story version and just answer any questions on the detail they have. And I've noticed that people tend to add more details when they're lying. For example: my 8th grade boyfriend cheated on me (cuz he wasn't gettin anything, except a quick peck on the lips.) and he had a big fat purple hickey on his neck. This was his story: "I was riding my bike home from Dairy Queen where I went right after school and when I was in the neighborhood I ran into a garbage can and the front tire of my bike came off and bounced back and hit me in the neck." I mean, I would have known anyway. But he still added a lot of details... Another example: My friend owed me $40 and she said she WAS gonna pay me back, except she was in the abandoned house with a few people and it was in her back pack and they all dumped their back packs off in one room, then they saw people walking up to the house so they dipped without grabbing their bags, and the guys took the bags to their school and the money was gone when she got it back.
