I didn't know it was common... I would imagine it's like the whole thing where jerks pick on other kids, and the other kids think they're just insecure, and the Hummer owners are the jerks who think they're more manly and the other people think they're just making up for a lack of manliness, and in reality they're both just making themselves feel better. Personally I dislike Hummers for environmental reasons, though, and don't really sympathize much when gas prices go up.
