+366 Pretty soon Youtube is going to start putting commercials in the MIDDLE of their videos, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

this has already happened to me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Haha... no! Are you serious? That pisses me off! Was it a long video?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It was about 1/4 of the way through a music video. I was pissed.

A MUSIC VIDEO? That's ridiculous, that's exactly what I was thinking when I was making this post though, because the music video was on vevo and I couldn't even pause or mute it and I had to pause the other video I was watching, so I can listen to my original video and the one on vevo....

You can either pay to use YouTube, or you can deal with the adverts. Providing that service costs money, and that money has to come from somewhere. Besides, YouTube partners get paid when someone watches a video with an advert. You're helping out your favorite YouTuber by dealing with the ads.

I know about all of that, but look at amirite... for example, it's surrounded by adverts. These adverts are also paying to be on here... the difference is, they're not interrupting your video while you're trying to watch it. Oh youtube also does adverts on the sides, you make it sound like it's about making the bare minimum, but it's not it's about greediness and making a shit load of profits. You have to agree that watching a 30 second video is ridiculous when all you want to do is watch a 5 second video of a guy getting hit by a ball in the balls....

Think about it, though. Amirite isn't nearly on the same scale of YouTube. YouTube has become a pretty integral part of the internet, and maybe even society itself. It's absolutely massive, and to keep the whole process free, I can't blame them for putting up the advertisements. I agree, that would be ridiculous, however I don't see that. I've only seen advertisements for videos made by YT partners or Vevo. I'm fine sitting through a little advert to help one of my favorite YTers make a living. I've only seen two videos that ever put an advertisement mid-video, and they were well over an hour long. I suppose I'm just too chill of a person to care, but I think everyone is making such a massive fuss over something that's not too big of a hinderance, and allows a great service to remain free.

I kinda responded to your response to sure instead of me, but anyways facebook, myspace, and twitter and what not are prolly better examples. And I'm really not complaining with this post I'm just saying, I wouldn't be surprised if they did that. Oh yeah and you get adblock with chrome and firefox for free, so why would they make it so easy for you to not be able to see those commercials?

I suppose Facebook is a good example. It's the second most popular website according to Alexa, with YouTube coming in at third. In any case, I would guess the allowing users to upload as many videos as they want and the like costs more than just hosting a social networking site. Still, I think it's just smart marketing. We can't get mad at someone for wanting as much money as they can get, and it's not like the ads are a huge deal. If you're going to place an ad on a webpage with a video, it makes sense to put it before the video, considering it's the center of attention.

Yeah definitely, I was actually discussing what you just said with my friends earlier. The whole thing about cost and value and how if you're willing to pay, then they're willing to raise the cost haha

They were getting along perfectly fine before, when they didn't have so many. Maybe they could stop making so many updates and save some money. I haven't seen a single update that I consider an improvement.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Sure...): They've grown, and the bigger you are, the more money you need. That's just simple economics. That's also your opinion, entirely. I like some of the new updates, they add to the flow of the website and make it easier to get from video to video, or watch other videos from the same place.

So okay, what about facebook? That's kinda big, but you don't have to watch a commercial in order to update your status or go into chat mode. Everyone is okay with having more adverts, just not the commercials before the video. A lot of other websites that are as big if not bigger than youtube get away with not having commercials. Youtube DOES make enough money already without the commercials and even if they needed more adverts, they have the option of adding it as a link in the white space. In addition to that, I wasn't complaining when I made this post, I was just saying that they will probably continue with their trend and add commercials to the middle of the video. It's my prediction of the future, not a complaint or anything.

My Spanish teacher was attempting to look up funny videos towards the end of class one day, and as YouTube was blocked, we were simply using a different site. That site played the commercials halfway through the video, while your video was playing. So, you had to wait for the commercial to finish, then go back and re-play your video. It was aggravating.

The AdBlock Plus addon, if you use Firefox, gets rid of them all. It's funny, I never even realized YouTube had ads until I tried it without AdBlock. I'm kinda surprised they made it that easy to get around.

Yeah, chrome has it too. However the one on chrome blows chunks. I like the one on firefox better though.
