+243 What if you were to invent a time machine and go back in time and killed yourself. That means you never invented the timemachine. Which means you didnt kill yourself. The universe explodes amirite?

it's this wonderful thing called the Grandfather Paradox, and no, the universe would not explode

There are a few theories, like anonymous said. You might branch off into an alternate timeline, the universe might correct for the paradox like nothing happened, you might go in a loop forever living from the person who was nearly assassinated to the person who attempted it, our my own personal favorite, time travel is impossible which is why situations like this are impossible.

I've got a couple of neutrinos that beg to differ. Edit: Just did a bit of research and this probably isn't true.

it sounds really confusing

well if you go back in time, the events had already occured. that means you cant kill yourself because you didnt in the first place

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This is why I don't want to invent the time machine. Knowing me, I'd probably do something stupid and end up being too confused to fix it.

I believe the "multiple universes" quantum mechanical explanation of this (: The world explodes into nothing, but a million other worlds live on.

I actually drew time once, and two different theories about what would happen if you went back or forward in time. I'll see if I can dig that out again.

You go back in time to a specific point, and kill your former self. The former self dies, and is unable to exist in the futer. This SHOULD mean that former self is able to survive b/c future self doesn't go back to kill, but it would just end up killing yourself, and getting it over with, b/c if you kill yourself, your life will just end there, regardless of future events. Anyway, that's my midnight-on-meds opinion. SCIENCE!

This type of thing is one of the reasons why I don't believe time travel is possible.
