-84 You've always wondered why they teach chemistry in school. Why are they teaching us about something that 99% of us will never use? Nobody randomly walks up to a person on the street and asks them how to make chemical compunds, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe It's because they want us to be enlightened citizens who don't believe the dihydrogen monoxide scam.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I kid you not, I just came here to say that exact thing.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I haven't started chemistry yet. What's dihydrogen monoxide?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

H2O (Water)... somebody used "dihydrogen monoxide" and presented a bunch of facts about water, which made it sound like a water pollutant. A bunch of people believed it.

What's the scam about?

Sorry, I edited the comment and then got the notification... :)

http://www.dhmo.org/ just stuff like this

by Anonymous 11 years ago

that's terrible :/

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No one ever uses it but chemists and people like that! We could be "enlightened" with something much more useful.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Such as a texting class? A class that doesn't involve any work? Science will always be there and you can't just ignore it and pretend that it doesn't exist.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Uh, "chemists and people like that" had to go to high school too. Believe it or not but there might be one person who'll end up being a chemist or a chemical engineer in your class. And they have to start somewhere. Not to mention, everyone should have a basic understanding of chemistry.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well... if you want to be a biochemist, like myself, chemistry it a very immporant subject to know. And what if someone on Cash Cab pulls over and asks you what is the chemical formula for ammonium phosphate is?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I didn't say anything about texting in class. Nor did I say anything about wanting a class that's easier. I have a high A in chemistry. I'm taking all honors and AP classes. Don't bother me with "easy".

by Anonymous 13 years ago

L2ReplyButton. And I don't believe you about that second part because your lack of thinking skills were shown in that first part.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It is true, but I would like to point out the fact that I was on amirite with my idiot friend, who tends to be a troll. Not that you had any way of knowing that,of course, so I can't exactly blame you. She posted this to make fun of the fact I was bitching about my chemistry homework. I'm actually hardly ever on this site, so I don't notice when she does periodic "hacks" (I say that because I know she's doing it and could change the password but I just don't care.) So from the real WinterRose, I say that I do think a basic knowledge of chemistry is important, but I think it could be incorporated into other curriculum that meets the needs of a more diverse range of students by providing them with everyday useful knowledge(such as CPR or first aid) as well as more specialized skills. As a person looking to go into international business, I am not provided with a special mandatory class, so I do not believe it is fair to place higher value on one extremely specialized thing over another. I feel that a general course that teaches practical chemistry knowledge with biology and medical science would do the job better, but I respect the value chemistry has in society. I'm sorry.

Don't mix bleach and ammonia.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Uhhhh.. it creates a toxic gas people! It's very dangerous and it scares me that more people don't know about it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Anybody with common sense knows not to breath, touch, or ingest a substance that they do not know of.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ugh. You're one of THOSE people.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well I'm going to major in chemistry and I plan to be a pharmacist so I think its pretty important. Also, I think it's really interesting that two clear liquids can combine and make a colored precipitate

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Aside from it being important to have a basic understanding of all subjects, as other people have pointed out, high school subjects also help people decide what they might want to do in the future. For example, I might not have chosen to continue studying biology if I hadn't had high school bio.
