Ms was designed to allow women to hide their marital status if they wished it. Quite a lot of people just assume that if you use Ms you're single or divorced.

I believe in the old days, younger men were called "master" and were called "mister" as they got older. It's similar to how in some other languages an older woman would be called "madam" or "frau" or whatever, regardless of marital status.
