In medieval times that's exactly how it was. If a woman was obese and pale it meant she was wealthy and well fed. If a women was tanned and skinny she was probably a working peasant. This is why a lot of medieval paintings there would be a more obese woman featured instead of a skinnier woman. They were percieved as very beautiful.

Actually, thats how it is in some parts of the world where food is scarce. A little weight is perceived as beautiful and rare.

In Mauritania, women are perceived as beautiful only when they're obese, so young girls are sent to "fattening camps" where they are force fed thousands of calories per day. Also most men there find that "skinny women are disgusting" It's like the states, in a parallel universe :P
