most drugs were originally used for spiritual use. Since most occur in nature, people found them in the search for food, before discovering their psychoactive purposes. They were probably simply eaten at first, and eventually, people discovered that igniting the plants were much more effective.

This may be the case for psychoactive mushrooms, peyote, and possibly the coca plant, but not many others. In this particular case, the OP seems to be talking about cannabis. Cannabis happens not to be psychoactive unless taken in very, very large doses. That's why it's dissolved into fats and cooked with instead, this helps it get into the digestive system undestroyed.
