+685 People who make fun of obese people at the gym are pathetic. It took them a hell of a lot more courage to go there, knowing they're significantly bigger, than the person mocking them will likely ever have. amirite?

Making fun of obese people on their asses in fast food restaurants is another story.

No it's not. It's never acceptable to tease someone. Whether their at mcdonalds or the gym.. Just leave them alone. I'm sure they KNOW they're overweight, without you having to inform them.

Think of it this way: The more they get made fun of the more encouraged they are to work out, and if they work out they'll be healthier and happier down the road

Making fun of them at the gym will DISCOURAGE them from going and losing weight...

Just trying to be an optimist...

If they're at the gym to be healthy, get stronger, and feel better... the same as you... then what is really there to laugh at?

I agreed... until the last part. Just because you are thin at the gym doesn't mean you have less confidence than someone who is larger at the gym.

I think it does. I mean, yes, everyone is different, but a thinner person wouldn't stand out at the gym as much (as opposed to a larger one). I consider it the equivalent of a much older person going back to high school because they know they need the degree. That has to be rough.

Whether or not you go to the gym doesn't convey your courage. Sure, it takes more confidence to go to the gym when you're larger, but that doesn't mean that the larger person is more confident than a thinner person at the gym. It's the freaking gym. It doesn't tell your life story.

When you're a good 300, 400 pounds it can...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Just because they have enough courage to go to the gym at 300 lbs (which would take a lot of confidence) doesn't mean that they are suddenly this stupid confident person with more courage than every single thin person at the gym. If you're letting whether or not you go to the gym show your character, then you're doing something wrong. I'd prefer to be known as confident for how I deal with people than being large and doing to the gym.

I agree. Similar situation happened a couple month ago - I was on a bus, and it was around 3.30, so it was full of schoolkids, and the bus passed a large lady jogging, and they all started laughing and making comment. I mean, really? You're laughing at someone getting exercise?
