I did once have it happen to me, on a very awkward evening at a friend's house when I wasn't sure whether or not to take out the rubber bands on my braces before sitting down to eat. I knew I was supposed to, but it's rather disgusting to watch, so in the end I decided to leave them. Towards the end of the meal I realized one was missing. I'd eaten it. Somehow, this made me laugh hysterically.

It's awkward when you overuse the word 'and' and your sentence rambles on and then it finally gets to the point of the story and by that time the reader is just wanting the sentence to end and they forget what the original point of the sentce was and it's awkward.
